Convert legacy DOC files to DOCX offline

Understand the one-way support for DOC and DOT, preserve original Word files, and validate DOCX outputs during a local document migration.

Definition. A legacy Word migration reads an older binary Word file and creates a document in a newer format. OfficeAPI lists .doc and .dot as Word inputs, while .docx is both an input and an output. A migration can therefore keep processing local while changing the format distributed by your application.

Why is the conversion direction important?

The 2 legacy extensions below are input-only in the published conversion matrix. A file being readable does not mean OfficeAPI writes that format. Check the input and output columns separately before designing a round trip.

Extension Meaning Read Write
.doc Word 97–2003 document Yes No
.dot Word 97–2003 template Yes No
.docx Office Open XML Word document Yes Yes

A template and a completed document are different source materials. If your archive contains .dot files, decide whether the intended result is a document for reading or a reusable template workflow; a DOCX output should not silently be treated as a replacement for every template behavior.

How do you organize an archive migration?

Use 4 stages, controlled by your application:

  1. Inventory the files by extension and keep originals in an unchanged archive. Include templates separately from completed documents.
  2. Select DOCX as the documented Word output and choose a dynamic library or process integration.
  3. Process a small representative set first. Record which original file corresponds to each new file before expanding the workload.
  4. Inspect the resulting documents in the receiving application and retain source/result pairs for any case requiring investigation.

For larger collections, use the offline batch workflow to plan naming, retries and result review. These controls belong to your application; the product overview does not define a built-in migration scheduler.

What should a migration preserve operationally?

Keep filenames, directory relationships and business identifiers in a separate inventory when they matter to the archive. Check documents containing tables, page breaks, embedded graphics and non-Latin text. Do not use a successful conversion alone as evidence that every feature in an older file has an equivalent behavior in DOCX.

OfficeAPI offers 2 invocation paths and runs on 6 operating systems. Select a target environment that fits the archive's existing storage and access controls, then validate there before moving the whole collection.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert the result back to DOC?

DOC is not a documented output. This workflow is not a reversible DOC/DOCX round trip.

Should I overwrite the old files?

Keep originals during evaluation and migration so you can compare results and revisit a conversion without losing source material.

Is PDF a different migration goal?

Yes. DOCX is an editable document format; PDF output serves a different distribution workflow. Choose the result your users actually need.
